About the piece

Written in July 2023 for John Robinson and the choir of Blackburn Cathedral. The opening is quiet and prayerful in a slow five-in-a-bar, building to a full Gratia plena.

At Benedicta tu the music moves into a lilting three-eight. The lower voices hold long sustained chords while the sopranos and tenors carry the tune, rising to a fortissimo Jesus and a broad Sancta Maria, Mater Dei.

The tenors and basses lead Ora pro nobis, the choir drops right down for nunc et in hora mortis nostrae, and the piece closes as it began, with a soft Ave Maria that fades to nothing.
